Hand-Dyed Quilt No. 02 — Botanical Check

The second piece in the Field & Fiber Hand-Dyed Quilt Series, Botanical Check is a one-of-a-kind heirloom quilt made slowly from cotton-hemp cloth and color gathered from plants.

Each colored square was dyed by hand using avocado, pomegranate, madder root, or logwood. Together, the dyes create a quiet botanical palette of muted rose, earthen gold, warm clay, and soft violet-grey, set against undyed cloth in a simple checkerboard arrangement. Subtle shifts in color reveal the individual character of each dye bath.

The reverse is made from cotton-hemp cloth dyed entirely with madder root, giving the quilt a warm, softly variegated backing. It was quilted by hand, and the binding was finished by hand with visible Sashiko thread. Washing has drawn the natural fibers and hand stitching into a soft, beautifully crinkled texture that will continue to relax with use.

Measuring 36 × 53 inches, it is generously sized for a crib, reading corner, wall display, or favorite lap quilt. It was created to be used and loved now, then kept and passed along.
